New UAE labour law: you can’t be fired over a mental health condition
Life in the UAE is all about acceptance and helping people be the best version of themselves. And the mental health law that was passed recently helps us do just that.
It deals with among other things, acceptance in the workplace. According to the law, passed on December 20 2023, employers are not allowed to fire or restrict job opportunities over a mental health condition, especially if it requires someone to check into a mental health institution.
The law also ensures patient confidentially.
If an employer is found violating the law, they could face fines between Dhs50,000 and Dhs200,000.
In addition, the law prohibits the provision of mental health services without the permission of a competent authority, reports Emirates News Agency (WAM).
In other words, the law deals with protecting the patient and defines his/her relationship with each of the parties dealing with them, as well as providing the necessary health care in accordance with the best standards and practices.
So if you find yourself facing a mental health condition such as anxiety, burnout or feel the need to reach out to a mental health professional for any reason, you can be safe in the knowledge that you won’t be discriminated against.
