The UAE will use more nuclear reactors in the future
According to a senior official in Abu Dhabi, the Federal Organization for Nuclear Regulation, which oversees the nuclear industry in the United Arab Emirates, is "actively developing" plans for maintaining the reactors.
By the middle of this year, the fourth and final unit of the Baraka nuclear power plant in Al Dhafra, Abu Dhabi, is expected to begin commercial operations. Upon reaching full capacity, the four-reactor facility will provide 25% of the power required by the United Arab Emirates.
"The nuclear regulatory body is preparing for such a situation, even though the UAE government will decide on new reactors," stated FANR director general Christer Victorson. "It depends on the administration as to whether or not we will see it here. We make sure we're prepared if the government decides to construct more nuclear power plants, whatever of size," he said.
Victorson told the Gulf Times, "We're gearing up now to make sure we have the right competence and the right systems in place."
