Woman Fakes Marriage to 'Wealthy' Man, Defrauds Relatives of $1.6 Million
A 40-year-old Chinese woman, identified as Meng, was sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison for orchestrating a fake marriage and scamming her relatives out of 12 million yuan ($1.6 million). After her real estate business collapsed in 2014, she convinced a driver to pose as her wealthy husband, promising discounted property deals. Over several years, she collected large sums from at least five relatives, some of whom sold their homes. The fraud was exposed when victims discovered the properties they "bought" were actually rented. Meng and her accomplices received prison sentences for contract fraud.
